From Team DENHAM: Amsterdam’s Best Bars

There are so many amazing aspects about living in Amsterdam, but one of our favourite things is enjoying a chilled drink at one of the city’s many bars. Our DENHAM team have shared their favourite (secret) spots where to enjoy a drink in the city.

Kade West is my favourite hangout. I live around the corner and it’s a bar for locals in the West of Amsterdam. So many times I’ve had great wine and  conversations with my friends on their sunny terrace. It’s the perfect place for a night full of drinks and comfort food! The guys behind the bar are so friendly, the service is good and the atmosphere is very relaxed!”

Emily Flier, Junior Women’s Account Manager NL

Bar Spek is really nice and easy going! You can go there for breakfast, lunch or an meal. Good food at a good price. Cafe Hoppe is also great!”

Bart Koenraad, Men’s Salesmanager Men NL

Bar Kosta. In summer, the outdoor terrace has a beautiful vibe.  If it’s cold, the inside is super cosy, with an East meets West feel. The menu also reflects this, offering everything from incredible dumplings to spare ribs, parmesan fries with truffle mayo and poke bowls if you’re feeling something a bit more healthy!”

Amy Wren, Content Creator

“You can’t miss Bar Oldenhof, which is like a 1920s-inspired speakeasy. You need to ring a doorbell to get in, and the decor has a vintage feel with lots of velvet and wood. They have a creative cocktail menu and, though pricey, the drinks are fantastic in flavour and made with only premium liqueurs.”

Style summarised in a few words A mashup of raw denim, biker jackets and Danish clean basics — and always a hat.

Sneakers or boots?  Boots with jeans, sneakers with pantalons.

Three things you would bring to a desert island? The babe, our baby boy and my hammock — for me the most important things in life.

Favourite travel destination? New York. It’s the best place where you can find everything you crave!

What do you love most about Amsterdam? The small little brown bars on every corner of the street, and the fact that you can stroll from the Jordaan district to the Amstel in less than 30 minutes. It’s feels more like a big village, not a city.

What’s your best fashion advice? Don’t try too hard. Don’t push yourself. Choose quality over quantity. Be aware of sustainability. Choose brands that relate to what or who you are.

How did you first hear about DENHAM? When they opened the first store (10 years ago!) I had some denim freaks in my inner circle and they were super hyped by the selvedge from DENHAM.

What do you like about the brand? The people, the philosophy, the need to be sustainable, the way they collaborate with such great talents and big artists.

What’s your favourite DENHAM style? The dark blue selvedge jeans are essentials, but I also dig the designs made with Candiani Denim — they’re edgy, have a nice fit and are really recognizable.

How do you style your jeans? Mostly with boots, but sometimes with strange Vans or indigo Converse, plus an oversized denim or biker jacket.

Best tip you’d give to a tourist visiting Amsterdam for the first time? Get lost, talk to strangers, be kind, and never ever rent a bike! 😉

From Team DENHAM: Our Summer Playlist

When the sun in shining and the days are long, nothing beats a great summer playlist! Whether you’re enjoying a day at the beach or an ‘al fresco’ dinner with friends, we love a good tune. Here’s what our team at DENHAM have been listening to this summer.

Maggy Tuijp (Collection Developer Denim): My summer playlist is diverse, with new albums of Drake, The Weekend, Post Malone and Kendrick Lamar, who I will see live at Lowlands this summer! I am also a sucker for ’80s and ’90s hits. On Friday afternoon in the office, we always play Ronnie Flex, Lil’ Kleine and Bizzey.

Blijf bij mij (Ronnie Flex)

Pray for me (The Weekend & Kendrick Lamar)

Drama (Bizzey)

In my Feelings (Drake)

Rockstar (Post Malone)

Marcia Godet (Retail Director Europe): I can’t imagine a day without music! Next to my favourite ’90s and ’00s R&B and hip hop, these songs where on repeat this summer:

In My Feelings (Drake)

Catch Up (Josylvio)

One Kiss (Calvin Harris feat. Dua Lipa)

OTW (Khalid)

Nim Gadhia (Senior Designer): My music choice is always eclectic. I pick up tracks (using shazam) when I’m out in stores, in bars, watching movies or tv shows. Some are old, some are new,  some are “good” and some are “bad.” The five tracks I have on heavy rotation at the moment:

Stir it up (Patti Labelle)

Bad Bad News( Leon Bridges)

Inhale (Duke Dumont)

You met your match (Stevie Wonder)

Hello Stranger (Barbara Lewis)

Jessica Kleyn (Online Merchandiser & Product Fulfilment): My music choice varies; I love hip hop, R&B and songs of today, but my preference goes to tunes from the ’80s and ’90s. But don’t use me as your DJ, except if you enjoy listening to songs on repeat!

I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Whitney Houston)

The Way You Make Me Feel (Michael Jackson)

Juicy (The Notorious B.I.G.)

Versace On The Floor (Bruno Mars)

Him & I (G-Easy, Halsey)

Cat Veder (Graphic Designer): I create a new playlist every summer! The music depends on where I am geographically; when I was touring through Morocco I loved jazzy, upbeat acoustic songs. When visiting my family’s home in Italy, I like classic sing-a-longs to hum with the windows down while cruising through the hills. My top five this summer are:

Hot Dreams (Timber Timber)

Master of None (Beach House)

Dreams (Feetwood Mac)

B-A-B-Y (Carla Thomas)

Helplessly Hoping (Crosby, Stills & Nash)

From Team DENHAM: Amsterdam’s Best Restaurants

Here at DENHAM, we believe it’s impossible to visit Amsterdam and not fall in love with the city. We’ve been based here since 2008, when Jason Denham founded his namesake brand, and the city has always remained dear to our hearts. From the beautiful architecture to the culture, canals and cafes, there’s something for everyone … and when it comes to restaurants, we have some pretty great options to pick from. Scroll down for insider’s tips from our DENHAM team!

Café Rijsel. My wife and I first went there by chance five years and we were blown away by their passion for cooking seasonal local produce. If you can get a table, I highly recommend it.”

Ben Sibthorpe, International Sales Director

“My all-time favourite is The Seafood Bar. They serve very good food with a typical Amsterdam casual atmosphere. Try the fish and chips!”

Maggy Tuip, Collection Developer Denim

“My most special dinner was on Vuurtoreneiland. The whole experience of the island was really special to me: they have Amsterdam’s only lighthouse in the middle of nature, where they cook on open fire using only local products.”

Stephanie Beltman, Sales Manager Women NL

Loetje! It’s an original Amsterdam restaurant that serves the best ‘Dutch’ steak with gravy. I always order the Bali XL, which is spiced up with sambal and is extra large.”

Michiel Peters, Retail Manager Europe

“It’s hard to choose because there are many good ones and it depends on what I’m in the mood for! Some of my favorites are Brut de Mer,  Mr.Porter and Michiu (for sushi take-out).”

Marcia Godet, Retail Director

“I love De Klepel (super cozy and the best wine) and Restaurant Breda. They have high-quality food and best service, with a personal approach and warm ambiance.”

Milou Dooijes, Global PR Manager

Favourite thing about working at DENHAM? Definitely the PEOPLE.

Favourite jean? Difficult to say, as that changes every month. At the moment Alex GRNA, a loose jean with rips. For all year round I love my black Spray’s and Monroe’s.

Virgin denim or stretch? Stretch.

Trench coat or leather bomber jacket? Leather jacket (the one I’m wearing in the picture is my favourite).

Sneakers or heels? I have lots of shoes: sneakers, boots and heels. My sneakers see the most daylight and to be honest, most of my heels I hardly wear.

Favourite thing about Amsterdam? There is so much to do in this relatively small city. I love the cosiness of the city in the summer when everybody is outside and enjoying the weather in the park, on the water, sitting in front of their house, or on a terrace. It feels then very vibrant.

And a fun one: pizza or pasta? Easy: pasta! Especially if it’s pumpkin filled ravioli or a good mac-and-cheese. Yum 😊

From Team DENHAM: Best Summer Getaways

Ahhh, summer. There are few things we love more than the sand between our toes and the sun on our faces (especially because it rains a LOT in Amsterdam). But when Europe is at your doorstep, there are many options for where can you escape. Our DENHAM staffers share their favourite summer holiday destinations on this side of the Atlantic.

Emporda in Catalonia, Spain. Enjoy the beautiful Costa Brava coast; its got great little bays and local villages with traditional Catalonian food. There’s variety for everybody. See you there!”

Edward van Loo, Operations Manager After Sales

“So far my favourite spot is Crete in Greece. It’s got Caribbean vibes with transparent waters, white sand, lots of sun and amazing scenery.”

Mikael Torres, Ecommerce Conversion Manager

Lisbon is the ideal place to visit throughout the year. You can explore the city and get lost in the small streets, or enjoy delicious food and wine on the beaches. More time left? Rent a car and head up to Sintra for some cultural sightseeing!”

Deirdre Bijlstra, International Sales

“Anywhere in Italy — though Puglia is my favourite region. The whole countryside is dotted with adorable ‘trullo,’ which are little white houses topped with conical roofs. Plus, there are great beaches, incredible food and (of course) excellent wine. The whole atmosphere is wonderfully laidback and relaxed.”

Lydia van de Kreeke, Head of Copy

Corfu, Greece. If you go at the right time it’s not too hot. It’s a very green island and I really enjoyed driving around, exploring the small villages and beaches.”

Sjoerd Borneman, Production & Buying Director

Barcelona, Spain. There’s always nice weather, with tons of palm trees, good shopping and a beach in the city centre! Plus they have amazing food at affordable prices.”

From the DENHAM Kitchen: Falafel Salad

Our amazing chef, Sonja, shares her secret recipe for falafel salad! It’s one of our lunchtime favourites.

For a large bowl of falafel salad you will need:

A big bag of green salad

3 grated carrots

¼ of a white cabbage, grated

¼ of a red cabbage, grated

Handful of roasted pumpkin seeds

A dressing made of tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and honey

20 pieces of falafel (either from the store of homemade)

Feta cheese

Lebanese bread  and hummus (to serve)

Homemade falafel:

2 cups dried chickpeas (do NOT use canned or cooked chickpeas)

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 cup fresh parsley leaves, stems removed

3/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, stems removed

1/2 cup fresh dill, stems removed

7-8 garlic cloves, peeled

Salt to taste

1 tbsp ground black pepper

1 tbsp ground cumin

1 tbsp ground coriander

1 tsp cayenne pepper, optional

1 tsp baking powder

2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Vegetable or Canola Oil for frying

How to make the falafel:

  1. Place the dried chickpeas and baking soda in a large bowl filled with water to cover the chickpeas by at least 2 inches. Soak overnight for 16-18 hours (more if the chickpeas are still too hard). When ready, drain the chickpeas completely and pat them dry.
  2. Place the fresh leaves of parsley, cilantro and dill in a large food processor. Pulse to finely chop the herbs.
  3. Now add the chickpeas, garlic and spices. Run the food processor for 40 seconds at a time until all is well combined, forming a smooth falafel mixture.
  4. Transfer the falafel mixture into a container and cover tightly. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until ready to fry (up to one whole night).
  5. Just before frying, add the baking powder and sesame seeds to the falafel mixture and stir with a spoon.
  6. Scoop tablespoons of the falafel mixture and form into patties (1/2 inch in thickness each). It helps to have wet hands as you form the patties.
  7. Fill a medium saucepan 3 inches up with oil. Heat the oil on medium-high until it bubbles softly. Carefully drop the falafel patties in the oil, and let them fry for about 3-4 minutes or so until medium brown. Avoid crowding the falafel in the saucepan; fry them in batches if necessary.
  8. Place the fried falafel patties in a colander or plate lined with paper towels to drain.

Prepare the salad by mixing the green salad with the carrots, white and red cabbage, the pumpkinseeds and the falafel, then drizzle with dressing and crumbled feta cheese. Serve it with a lovely piece of Lebanese bread and hummus.

Favourite thing about working at DENHAM? Working in the factories and laundries with Jason.

Favourite jean? Spray (super tight, skinny fit).

Virgin denim or stretch? Candiani stretch with the best recovery.

Trench coat or leather bomber jacket? Wool trench in winter and a leather biker in spring.

Sneakers or heels? Heels.

Favourite thing about Amsterdam? Everything is close by. I live in the city centre and all my friends and favourite places are 10 minutes by bike. It’s the best! I also like that the airport is so close by, which helps a lot with all the travelling I do.

And a fun one: pizza or pasta? Pasta. Pizza always seems a good idea but I get bored after two slices.

From Team DENHAM: Amsterdam’s Best Brunch Spots

When it comes to weekends, our DENHAM team knows how to do ‘em right. And what better way to spend a Saturday morning than bottomless cups of coffee and brunching on pancakes? Here are our insider tips for where to head for the best brunch (and coffee!) in town.

Dignita in Oud West. They have the best pancakes in town, which they serve with vanilla mascarpone and a caramelised clementine. Order with a side of bacon and finish with a latte. They open early so it’s a great place to start to my weekend. I grab a window table, order my usual and get my thoughts together for whatever adventures lie ahead.”

Nimesh Gadhia, Menswear Designer

“The best brunch spot in Amsterdam Oost is Benji’s! I love the vibe and the food is amazing — especially their mashed avocado with grilled chicken.”

Jessica Kleyn, Ecommerce Fulfillment Manager

“It’s an Amsterdam classic: Bakers & Roasters.  The queues are horrendous but if you bag a spot on the bench and grab a coffee whilst you wait, the food is worth it.  The Huevos Rancheros is one of the best in the city!”

Katy Peck, Collection Developer

Samen is a super cool spot to sit in or outside, and enjoy their lovely healthy menu. The hazelnut latte is to die for!”

Nadia Zouaoui, Office Manager

“My two favourites are De Bakkerswinkel and Bakers & Roasters. Both places are cozy, have good vibes and friendly service. Try their delicious coffee, healthy juices or eggs dishes.”

Maretha Johan, Production Coordinator Tops
